Happy

Say hello to our little friend…

They called him Pistol

We named him Happy

We named him Happy

Mitch was working at Brookdale yesterday doing his maintenance gig when 10 minutes before he was to come home, this little guy needed a new forever home.  He’s had a tough go of things for the last few months, after moving into the assisted living facility with his owners, they both became unable to physically or mentally care for him.  The staff had hoped to keep him as a community dog, but unfortunately a resident repeatedly slapped him in the face when he wouldn’t stop barking  (and admitted to doing it) which resulted in a bite, and rightfully so!  Since it did happen though, they had to find him a home and quick.  Thankfully Mitch was at the right place at the right time.IMG_3230

Charlie (our golden) took to Happy like they’d been buddies forever. Milo, on the other hand, takes a little longer to make a new friend. So he’s a little skeptical.

Milo’s thinking…what’s your deal, you gonna steal the spotlight or what?

Happy’s been giving Milo space and time to adjust, and it seems to be working.

But Charlie and Happy are already running around outside playing together

Milo's a mama's boy so he'll just need a little time to warm up to our new family member.

Yeah, I know, I can be a little selfish… but I’m a work in progress too!

The best part is… Mitch now has his own cuddle bug.  Milo is a mama’s boy, which I love because I’ve always wanted a dog that would pick me first, but I know how Mitch feels wanting to have that same thing. Believe it when I say Happy takes the cake when it comes to being a lap dog.  He’s the best. He just wants to be loved.

This is him at the assisted living facility before Mitch brought him home. He’s just laying on one of the residents feet.

One Week In and A Pound Without

It’s official, we’ve been eating right for one week and we’re each exactly 1.2 lbs less than when we started. It’s been time consuming trying to figure what to make, getting all the ingredients and preparing it. A huge change for us, because it used to be, okay, lets have tuna helper and a can of peas.

First time ever our fruit basket is full… of fruit

Going from one, sometimes two meals in a day to eating FIVE times a day takes some getting used to. We’ve done real well actually and enjoyed six days at the gym.Mitch’s taken to running and is already up to a mile, I on the other hand am happy if I run a minute.

Had to buy another electric grill since ours is lost in storage. We've used it every day since we got it. Drain cup is a pain but cooks really well so far.

Sunday was our cheat day and we definitely itched a couple scratches, Mitch’s was a burger and mine was Doritos and root beer. To our surprise we didn’t binge out on tons of unhealthy foods.

Bush's Chili beans have a great recipe…and add a can of rotel. Delicious. ( Since we're eating good I didn't add the ketsup it calls for.)

There are a couple things we’ve noticed since changing our eating habits. The shopping is more frequent, we don’t go down many of the isles and our cart is never overflowing with random snacks and junk. I don’t think we’ve ever been so proud as to put our stuff on the belt before, just seeing how healthy we’re eating.

Fish, Sweet Potato with cinnamon, salad and tomato…. How sweet it is

Having breakfast really does effect how the rest of our day goes, we are both so much more active and involved with doing things instead of just blah, please pass me the candy, blah, when can I be couch commander, blah, blah, blah. Our energy levels have seriously increased.

Mitch's blueberry and banana whey protein drink

Mitch’s blueberry and banana whey protein drink.  We’ve used the magic bullet for years and wouldn’t go without!

Mitch, who was never much of a water drinker, has taken to drinking a gallon a day, and now has as many visits to the potty as I do, sometimes more! It’s been fun to hear him comment about having to go again, and again, and again.

Chicken stir fry with wheat rice. Really good! As you can tell, we'd already made a good dent in it.

One thing that we’ve found to be profoundly useful is the app MyFitnessPal. It is beyond awesomely cool. It adds up your calories and if you have a smart phone you can scan the bar code of whatever package your using and it will upload all the nutritional data into you diary. I’ve never, a day in my life before counted my calories but with this app it makes it fun and so easy.

Chicken Cobb Salad, We also invested in a food scale, worth it's weight in ounces… haha

Now onto the “Day’s of our Dog Lives”…I would like to pass onto other dog owners with the leashes that retract.

Retractable leashes, handy and hurtful. Yes, that's also a poo bag container and mace. Got to be ready for crap to happen either way.

Please don’t try to stop your dog by grabbing ahold of the rope when they are running. I accidentally did that the other day when Milo saw another dog and decided to run towards it. I felt the sting and when I looked down, OUCH.

I'm sorry… can I have a treat now!

After posting about us making it into town and our colorful welcoming crowd, I heard from a friend that “TLO” passed away the following night from a heart attack. I’m glad that we had a chance to give him a wave goodbye as we pulled out of the drive. Our condolences go out to his family.
